The Thousand Islands region features nearly 2,000 islands. There you can enjoy power boating, sailing, whitewater rafting, fishing, golfing, tennis and hiking. Boldt Castle is set on an island fashioned into the shape of a heart and is a monument to a real-life love story.

6:26 AM

As you devour this article, remember that the rest of it contains valuable information related to Vacation Home rentals and in some way related to Wisconsin cabin rentals, Maryland vacation home, county vacation home rental or lake home rentals for your reading pleasure.

If the home is on water well and septic, have them inspected by a professional. The best time to buy a vacation home is the first season after peak season. Many second home owners want to use it one-last-season, to then sell and have the carrying costs. Inventories of resale homes are greatest off-season and at reduced prices.

If you dream of owning a sunny villa in Italy, a cottage in Scotland or maybe a beach side apartment in the Caribbean, here are five essential tips to consider when looking for real estate overseas.

Once the decision is made to move forward, you need to figure out how much of a home you want and what type of home you can afford. The latter is a bit easier to quantify as most financial institutions prefer mortgage payments that are less than 29 of gross monthly income. However, if you have a good financial track record, banks will afford you some latitude. Obviously, lending rates are a crucial factor in this equation, especially if you go through the adjustable rate route. A word of caution: be careful of Adjustable Rate Mortgages that look particularly attractive in today's low interest rate environment as an up tick in rates could lead to a potentially unpleasant financial situation. Remember that buying now for a future retirement is a long term proposition and your new investment should appreciate with no financial carrying cost surprises.

Don't forget that if this article hasn't provided you with exact vacation home rentals information, you can use any of the main search engines on the Internet, like Ask Dot Com, to find the exact vacation home rentals information you need.

Owning a home, whether it be your first home, second home or a vacation property, can offer you significant tax advantages. When it comes to vacation or second homes, your tax advantages are dependent upon three things: how often you use your vacation home yourself, how often you rent it out, and how long it sits empty.

Nobody expects to be a victim of crime, but it does happen. By taking a little time to protect your home you can greatly reduce your chances of being a victim or make it easier to recover from a burglary.

Ask if the rental management requires your unit to offer clubhouse, pool and other amenities to seasonal renters as part of being in the rental program. Typically, these memberships are expensive and could be a hidden cost that reduces your profits. Meet and evaluate any personnel that manages these membership amenities.

We were thrilled to know that many people found this article about vacation home rentals and other international vacation homes, Buy a Home, and even Hayes vacation home rental helpful and information rich.

The mild weather year-round, coupled with the beautiful scenery and overabundance of rolling golf courses make golf holidays in Spain a popular vacation choice. Hiking: Traveling Safely Through Challenging Terrain

6:26 AM

You can find package holidays to take you everywhere from a beach resort to a dude ranch to an outdoor wilderness adventure. If you anticipate traveling anytime soon and want to experience the great outdoors, you might want to consider hiking. If you are a beginner hiker, read some of the tips and techniques below to help get you started. Hiking is not simply a long walk.

Hiking through ordinary terrain requires that you maintain a steady pace for hours at a time, and do so with only short breaks each hour. This might not seem that bad, until you ad in creeks and steep, slipper slopes that can make hiking at a higher altitude seem nearly impossible. It surely isn't impossible, but it does require certain techniques that must be adjusted according to the conditions you are in.

Walking on ordinary level terrain is usually done at a speed of two to four miles per hour at which pace you can burn anywhere from 50-150 calories hourly. Additionally, you lose about one liter of fluid for every hour of hiking and even more during a hot climate. This fluid loss must be replenished to keep your body hydrated. But, when the conditions become more challenging, you often find yourself walking up steeper slopes and at high elevations causing more of a strain and requiring your heart to work harder.

The more challenging terrains tend to be the most beautiful, though. Would you rather stroll around some brush in ordinary terrain or hike up a thick forested mountain? But, the conditions up that thick forested mountainside require more from the hiker tackling it. Be sure to pace yourself and monitor your heart rate. Try to stay on the lower range of 70 to 120 beats per minute, the average rate at rest and then during a harder workout.

This can help you avoid what is sometimes called Acute Mountain Sickness or High Altitude Syndrome, among other terms. Just as high altitudes can present challenges, crossing rivers and lakes can as well. Along with strength, experience and technique can make it a lot easier also.

Finding quality boots is the first step, specifically a waterproof, high-top boot to keep your feet dry. This is a must to avoid foot problems.

As far as technique for such conditions, it's about experience, common sense and intelligence. For instance, avoid the temptation of fording a river when you do not need it. Undercurrents, cold temperatures and slippery bottoms are only a few of the dangers you could face. If possible, step on rocks in a stream rather than directly walking through the water. Or, take a bridge or walk around the lake rather than swimming through it.

These alternatives will actually save energy. You will have less fatigue with a longer walk than a cold, short swim. Remember, a lot of it is about common sense. Hiking in the great outdoors can be an amazing experience, but getting injured or becoming unwell should not be part of the experience.

Andalucia - white villages and flamenco

6:26 AM

Andalucia is the most populated and second largest of the seventeen autonomous communities that constitute Spain. Its capital is Seville and it is bordered on the north by Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha; on the east by Murcia and the Mediterranean Sea and on the west by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.

The British colony of Gibraltar at the south shares its three-quarter-mile land border with the Andalusian province of C?diz.

Its varied landscapes, the stability of its climate with 3000 hours of sun per year and the friendly character of its population, have turned it into one of the most attractive and most visited regions.

Coastlines of fine sandy beaches characterize the provinces of Huelva and Cadiz, which face the Atlantic Ocean. The Mediterranean coast, from the Strait of Gibraltar to Almeria, on the other hand has a smoother climate with less wind and higher water temperatures.

Visitors to the region are spoiled for choice. From the golden beaches to those beautiful mountain ranges, and the famous 'white villages', the possibilities are endless. Sports lovers are well catered for here and anything from skiing in the Sierra Nevada to surfing at the coast of Cadiz can easily be found.

In Andalucia you will live the magic of Flamenco and bullfighting in their most authentic style, and myths like Don Juan and Carmen were born here. This is a land of great traditions, which has understood how to incorporate progress.

The Spanish spoken in the Americas is largely descended from the Andalusian dialect of Spanish due to the role played by Seville as the gateway to Spain's American territories in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Major Attractions in Andalucia

Seville: The Andalusian capital, the third largest city of Spain, is among the most beloved places by tourists, thanks to its unique ambience and its great monuments. The Arabian bell tower Giralda, the city's landmark, the enormous cathedral, Torre del Oro and the old district Barrio Santa Cruz are among the highlights.

Granada: The Moorish Jewel, located at the foot of snowy Sierra Nevada mountain range, is a must-see. Most outstanding is certainly the great Arabian palace Alhambra.

Cordoba: The long-time centre of Moorish Spain, Cordboa has monuments of outstanding importance. The Mezquita, the great Mosque, is perhaps, most impressive.

Malaga: Among its major attractions are the Moorish Alcazaba and the splendid Mediterranean coast. M?laga is also well known as being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the painter and sculptor.

Costa del Sol: The coast of Malaga is home to some of Spain's most impressive beaches. Among the most famous are in the towns of Marbella, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola and San Pedro de Alcantara.

Ronda: In the middle of the bizarre mountain range Serran?a de Ronda, at the edge of a canyon of a depth of 120 metres, you will find Ronda - certainly one of the most incredible and beautiful towns in Spain.

Almeria: Almeria is among those Andalusian cities that have best preserved their Moorish heritage. The Costa de Almeria is also an area of great tourist attractions.

Cadiz: Cadiz is one of the oldest cities in Spain. It is fascinating for its typical Andalusian ambience with whitewashed houses and tropical vegetation. Compared with the spectacular nature of other carnival celebrations, the light-hearted fun and entertainment of the Carnival of Cadiz makes it a unique fiesta which is well worth getting to know.

Huelva: Huelva is of great importance as a fishing port as well as for its industry. Christopher Columbus, who started his travel to America from the nearby Palos de la Frontera, marks the city and its surroundings. There you may still visit the monastery where he prepared his travel, alongside with a reconstruction of the port and the three famous ships.

Do?ana National Park: This extensive preserve including beach areas with moving dunes as well as marshy regions of great value concerning their fauna is located next to the outlet of Guadalquivir River, Matalasca?as, Acebuche and El Rocio. Numerous species of migrant birds, on their way from Eurasia to Africa, stay here during the breeding phase.

Costa de la Luz: The 'Coast of the Light', in the provinces of Huelva and Cadiz at the Atlantic Ocean, offers splendid beaches of fine sand. Major centres of attraction are Punta Umbria, Islantilla, Isla Cristina, Mazagon, Matalasca?as, Barbate, Algeciras, Tarifa, Conil de la Frontera, Chiclana de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Rota, Chipiona and Sanlucar de Barrameda.

Jerez de la Frontera: In the hometown of the world-famous Sherry wine several 'Bodegas' may be visited. Jerez is the site of a renowned equestrian school. Wine and horses mark the ambience of this manorial town.

Jaen: Its medieval fortress dominates Jaen, which is located inland. Additional attractions are the 11th century Moorish baths and the Renaissance cathedral. The nearby Sierra de Cazorla is an outstanding nature reserve.

Andalusian Cuisine

Andaluc?an cuisine is characterized by gazpacho, fried fish, the jamones of Jabugo and Trev?lez and the wines of Jerez, particularly sherry.

Fried Foods:
Frying in Andalusian cuisine is dominated by the use of an olive oil that is produced in the provinces of Ja?n, C?rdoba, Seville and Granada. The foods are dredged in flour 'a la andaluza' (meaning only flour, without egg or other ingredients). They are then fried in a large quantity of hot olive oil.

Fish and Shellfish:
With five coastal provinces, the consumption of fish and shellfish is rather high: white shrimp from the Bay of C?diz; prawns; murex; anchovies; baby squid; cuttlefish, flounder, etc.

Desserts:
Andalusian deserts are heavily influenced by medieval Andalusian cuisine. Notable dishes include pesti?os (a deep-fried pastry bathed in honey), alfajores, amarguillos (a form of almond macaroons) from Medina Sidonia, the polvor?nes (almond cookies of Estepa), lard bread, wine doughnuts, churro (a fried-dough pastry-based snack) and torrijas.

Music of Andalusia

Andalusia is best known for flamenco, a form of music and dance that is mostly performed by Gypsy people and popular throughout the world.

Improvised flamenco songs of ancient Andalusian origin are called Cante Hondo and are characterized by a reduced tonal ambiance, a lack of rhythm and repetition of notes. A single singer performs Cante Hondo songs.

Travel Bermuda - Your Complete Information Guide To This Quintessential Island

6:26 AM

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 570 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, lies an island filled with pink sand beaches, pastel cottages and quintessential British traditions. With a landmass of only 21 square miles, it is one of the smallest territories in the world. Bermuda actually consists of around 140 islands, of which 8 of these are linked by bridges to form a continuous fishhook shaped area of land that runs 22 miles in length and only 2 miles across at its widest point. This is the Bermuda that most everyone knows because the other islands are uninhabited and some are only rocks.

Bermuda is a different island in many ways from those that you generally think about such as the Caribbean. It is very polite and slightly restrained in the sense that you won't find laid-back locals wandering around barefoot and offering you pi?a coladas. It is somewhat formal in dress, as you'll see the female residents in stockings and heels and the men in jackets, ties, Bermuda shorts, and knee socks despite the beautiful weather. Golf and tennis are popular pastimes and you will find that most visitors, as well as Bermudians, are over 40. It is a wonderful and charming island that offers many things to see and do with great places to go.

Bermuda weather is very temperate, not too hot and not too cold. It is a semi-tropical island that doesn't have a rainy season and there is no one month that receives an excess of rain. Showers can be heavy at times but you'll find that the skies clear quickly and that it doesn't usually affect your outdoor plans. The temperature rarely rises above 85 F, (29.5 C) perfect for sun bathing, swimming and all water sports and there is always a cool breeze at night. May to October are the warmest months with an average high of 82 F and an average low of 74 F. The coldest part of the year runs from January to March with average highs of 69 F and lows 60 F.

The Department of Tourism promotes 2 seasons for Bermuda weather; summer's 'beach and sizzle' and winter's 'golf and spa.' In summer, the island is filled with activities; hotel barbecues and evening dances to set off your daytime sightseeing trips, and the public beaches never close. During the off-season which runs from Nov-Mar, you'll find that the pace slows down significantly. Some of the sightseeing, dive, snorkeling, and water-skiing boats are dry-docked and only taxis operate tours of the island. There are also a few hotels and restaurants that will close, although having said that, most hotels in Bermuda do stay open and you'll find the prices slashed up to 40%. This is a great time to travel with perfect weather for golf and tennis, you can still rent boats, tour the islands and the best part? You can travel Bermuda and take full advantage of the uncrowded beaches, shops, restaurants, and walking tours and totally enjoy the beautiful sunny days.

If you're looking to rent a car while you travel Bermuda, you are going to be out of luck, as there are no car rentals available there! You can get around with public buses, ferries, rent a moped or scooter, you can use taxis - or even hire a horse and carriage. The bus system is fantastic, running on schedule all day, although there is no late system. Exact change, tokens or tickets are required. Tokens can be purchased at some hotels and guest houses, sub-post offices, and at the Central Terminal in Hamilton on Church Street. You can also get multi-day Transportation Passes for three or seven days that allow for unlimited bus trips which will save you some money. Metered taxis can be found at the airport and most large hotels and they can also double as tour operators if you want to put together your own sightseeing tour of the island. Bermuda taxi operators are among the world's finest and their knowledge and commentary can make for an unforgettable tour. You can rent them by the day, hour or mile. All taxis are metered and the tariff is fixed by law so rates are the same for all: $4 for the first mile, $1.40 for each additional mile and higher rates after 10 pm. Ferries are a scenic way to get around and can sometimes be much faster than the bus. They connect Hamilton with Paget, Warwick and the Somerset/Dockyard area. Moped rentals are available by the 1/2 day, day, week and long-term. The cost varies according to length of rental and type of cycle. Horse and Carriage tours are a nice way to see Bermuda. By day the drivers will point out the sights, and for the evenings it is very romantic.

The currency here is the Bermuda dollar and it has a 1-1 ratio to the US dollar. Both currencies are equally accepted at all establishments but the US dollar is the currency of choice because unlike the Bermuda dollar, it's exchangeable everywhere in the world. Average room prices vary as such: Low - $100/120 Mid - $120/180 High - $200+, average meal prices are: Low - $5/10 Mid - $10/25 High - $25-30. All hotels in Bermuda are subject to a 7.25% hotel tax which is added to your bill at check-out and there is also a departure tax but this is included in the price of your air ticket. When it comes to tipping, most restaurants add a 15% service charge to your bill, so just check to see if it is there so that you don't end up tipping twice and of course, if it's not there, this is the average. Hotels also generally add a service charge and this is 10%. For taxis, a tip of around 10% is average.

Bermuda has more sights to see than you will be able to visit in a single vacation, here are a just a few of the highlights. Visit the awesome underground of Bermuda, with one of the highest concentrations of limestone caves in the world, it offers a dream world that has even been the inspiration for many creative achievements including Hensen Associates 'Fraggle Rock' muppets. Make sure to take a visit to the Crystal Caves or Leamington Caves, both are along the Harrington Sound Road. The Royal Naval Dockyard which began in 1809, can be seen today restored as an entertainment and shopping complex, with restaurants, crafts market, arts centre, Bermuda Maritime Museum, historic Commissioner's House, cinema, and the Clocktower shopping mall. The Botanical Gardens which feature over 1000 varieties of plant life spread out over 36 acres of landscape and are open all year from sunrise to sunset. Take time to visit the Bermuda Aquarium, Natural History Museum and Zoo where you can take self guided tours if you choose and learn about Bermuda's beginnings, whaling industry, captivating undersea exploration, and fragile environment. The aquarium, museum and zoo are internationally recognized as a centre for the preservation and reintroduction of threatened species.

If diving and snorkeling are your thing, you will find some 350 shipwrecks that are scattered among the reef formations, making it an ever changing, living museum under the sea. Another great way to see this amazing world is through a Glass Bottom Boat Tour, offered during the days and nights. And let's not forget the endless array of the beautiful Bermuda beaches. With their pink sand and limestone dunes, you will find that the beaches on the south-shore are more scenic than those on the north-shore. The most popular, also the most crowded by tourists and locals is Horseshoe Bay Beach. Your best bet is to pick up 'Bermuda's Guide to Beaches and Transportation,' a free publication available at most hotels and in all Visitors Service Bureaus. It combines map and bus/ferry schedules, showing you the locations of the beaches and how to reach them.

Whether you are looking to visit a bustling city like the capitol of Hamilton, which offers plenty of shopping and sightseeing during the day; dinner, drinks and dancing by night to a lazy day on the beach, to the World Heritage Site and historic Town of St. George; Bermuda will cater to all of your needs. It can be a relaxed vacation destination or an international business center. It is a mix of ancient and new worlds, friendly people and there are so many things for you to take part in and enjoy. Whatever your desire, Bermuda is sure to welcome you.'

Tips For Booking Your Holiday Travel

6:25 AM

Holiday season is in the air. We could already breathe in and feel it. Everybody wishes to have a break, unwind and have a vacation from the exhausting everyday activities and chores of work. Truly, we deserve to have a time out.

Make this holiday season different from what you have before. Why not take a travel?

Many people say that it is really expensive and it will really cost a lot to have a travel. May it be a land, water or air holiday travel; surely it will have a cost. Nowadays, there are plenty of ways to have a vacation you dream and crave of having at a cheap cost.

Here are some of the tips:

Early birds catch the early worm! Book your trips early. Spare some time to call your travel company or agency. The more early you booked your holiday travel, the greater amount you will save. Consider that the demands for travel and flights are greater as the holiday season approaches. Note that travel companies have a number of flights per month. They cannot and will not provide a flight just for you.

Another advantage of having early booking is that you will have the opportunity to have great deals and options.

Set your itinerary. Choose exactly the places that you want to visit. List your itinerary in a piece of paper and also, do not forget to book and reserve your visit especially if you want to go to museums etc.

Reserve the hotel where you will spend your days. Do this as soon as you booked your flight.

It is advised that you have your travel agency. Most of these agencies now have promos and discounts for their customers for the holiday season. Most of them give travel packages that are budget friendly. Others give freebies and other items for gimmickries to attract customers and tourists. Use this as an opportunity to save and have cheap deals.

Being flexible is also a key in a more convenient and cheap holiday travel. If you are flexible enough, you can get into different flights that are available. Make sure that your schedule is open and flexible to all sorts of situations that may come along. Also, by being flexible you need to be choosy and things will easily go without minding the hassle.

Booking at the peak of the holiday season should be avoided in order for you to have a cheap travel.

Holiday season is created for us to stop and pause for a while and to appreciate the hardships that we had in the previous months. This is just once in a lifetime experience; make the most out of your travel.

Converting Old Properties In Brittany, France.

6:24 AM

I've just spent the day removing the mud from between the stones of our house in Brittany. The mud stands in place of lime or cement mortar which were unavailable or unaffordable when the house was built.

The process gave ample time for reflection on what should be done when an old house is modernised.

Here in Brittany it is impossible to preserve a house in its original state if it is to be lived in. All the memories of those times - mostly the memories have died with the people who lived then - would be of bad weather, mud, cramped living space, the cold and privation. Today we can avoid these things but we risk losing the spirit of these old places.

Ironically one of the features that we, and others like us, proudly retain is the dated front door lintel. But our French neighbours tell us that many such dated artefacts were actually looted from the local manoirs at the time of the revolution.

The upper storey of old houses was always a grenier - never lived in except by mice who feasted on whatever was stored there. These days the grenier becomes several bedrooms. They can boxed in as normal rooms or left open right up to the ridge - 15 feet, which is what we have done in part.

Next the walls would be as rough as the stone that made them, but possibly lime washed indoors every spring to control the population of bed bugs which spent part of their life in the walls. Nowadays we insulate them and cover them with plasterboard on the inside, and 'point' them on the outside so that the whole house looks like a wedding cake. We've avoided the wedding cake appearance on the outside - leaving the 'belles pierres' to speak for themselves. On the inside we try to preserve some of the unevenness of the walls and leave party walls with adjoining houses as they are - the rest covered in plasterboard that follows the contours of the walls.

The rooves were nearly always slated in Brittany, but the old slates have almost disappeared. They were of poor quality for the most part, but even the smallest were used (near the ridge of the roof). Like nearly everybody else we replace with Spanish slates. French slates from the Monts d'Arree or Trelaze in Anjou are only for the very rich.

As far as the floors are concerned we capitulate to modern practice, so tiled concrete replaces 'terre battue' (=beaten earth) which was the traditional floor material. This lives on, by the way, in dances called 'pile menu' which originally accompanied the actual process of consolidating the 'terre'.

So it is with water, gas, electricity and telephone: we have them all but we often think about the last farming family which lived here. All four daughters 'bettered themselves' and the only remaining sign of farming is a plough and a harrow at the bottom of our garden..

How can you reasonably honour such people who lived such hard lives ?

Booking Flights And A Tour

6:25 AM

If you're thinking about booking your next trip through a travel broker, you should understand what they can do for you and how they operate. Travel brokers buy seats on upcoming flight in bulk and sell them to people who want to save money on those flights. In order to make money, they have to sell the tickets quickly. While an airline may include booking fees and others costs when you buy tickets from them, they will usually wave these fees for brokers because they are buying so many tickets. This is one of the reasons why tickets are sold for less.

When looking for a reputable travel broker, you should conduct research online or use one of the more reputable companies who have a proven track record of saving people money. Unfortunately, there aren't too many rules when it comes to selling airline tickets for a discount rate. If you decide to buy tickets from a lesser known company or one that is new, you may lose your money and not get the seats you wanted. This can be a problem, but as long as you research companies beforehand, you should be fine.
Even though travel brokers can save you money, your travel agent may be able to save you even more.

Depending on where you are going, you may be able to save money and have the peace of mind that your tickets will be delivered and you will get the seats your want. While travel agents also buy tickets in bulk, they are licensed by the governments and must adhere to certain rules or they can lose their license.

Before using a travel broker, look for other ways to save money as well. You may be able to save by simply changing your plans and flying during the week instead of on the weekend. You may also be able to take a later flight and save even more money. When renting a car, rent one for the week in order to save money on weekday rental costs. Research restaurants in the area to see where the best deals of the day can be found. This will allow you to budget your food expenses. If staying in a resort, see if any of the meals are provided. This will also save you in food costs. If staying in a hotel, find one that offers a continental breakfast.

By finding ways to cut costs during your travels, you may not need to go through a travel broker. But if you need to book a vacation quickly, then a travel broker may be your only option. Make sure that you research the broker so you don't end up losing even more money in case you need to cancel or reschedule your vacation.

Saving money when traveling is everyone's goal, but sometimes you will just have to pay for good service. This is important when booking flights and arranging your vacation. In the end, you will have a much better time.

Sanibel Island Shells

6:25 AM

Sanibel Island, located off the southwest coast of Florida, is known for being the best shelling destination in the world. Those who come to Sanibel Island, enjoy the white sandy beaches, but also keep an eye out for the most beautiful shells they can find.

Why is it good for Shelling?

There are over four hundred species of shells that end up on the Sanibel island because unlike most barrier islands that run from North to South the Sanibel islands runs on a perpendicular scale, East to West.

In addition, the Sanibel Island is like a shelf for the seashells. The island is part of a plateau that reaches out in the Gulf of Mexico. If winds start or tides pick up the shells resting on this plateau are agitated and disrupted.

The Best Time To Go Shelling

The best time to go looking for shells is in the winter when the storm season has pushed the shells onto the shallow part of the plateau and left them onto the beaches. It is also best to look for shells during low tide.

This is when there is more beach to explore. It allows you to go onto the sandbar and it is a time when sediment from various levels are piled on to the beach, giving you more variety of shells to pick up.

The best location for shelling

The best location for the smaller shells is near the lighthouse at the tip of the island. If you are looking for the larger shells try the Captiva side. Here are two of the best places to start your search.

*Causeway Beaches-You can enjoy fishing windsurfing, picnicking and swimming as well as shelling. There are hundreds of species located in this area and there is no fee for parking on the beach

*Lighthouse Beach and Fishing Pier-Located at the eastern part of Sanibel and round the bay side, this is the place you will find the biggest and the smallest shells on the island.

Celebrate Saint Nicholas Day In Curacao

6:25 AM

Each December in the ABC Islands - Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao - locals and tourists celebrate the traditional Dutch holiday known as Saint Nicholas Day. Throughout the weeks leading up to the feast day on December 5, Sinterklaas - the Dutch precursor to the American Santa Claus - makes appearances throughout the islands and distributes gifts. Much like the Christmas season in America, the weeks surrounding Saint Nicholas Day are a very exciting time for Curacao and her sister islands. When you visit Curacao this year, add a little fun to your vacation by participating in some of the traditions of this special holiday.

As the character known as Sinterklaas appears each year to celebrate the feast day of Saint Nicholas, the fictional character of Dutch custom certainly bears a resemblance to the venerated saint. Saint Nicholas was actually the bishop of Myra, a city in what is now Turkey, in the 4th century. In the Catholic Church, Nicholas came to be the patron saint of children as a result of numerous stories claiming that the bishop had saved many children from lives of destitution, some from death. Today, Sinterklaas appears in Europe and the Caribbean wearing the traditional red cloak and mitre (pointed hat) of Catholic bishops. He carries a gold staff known as a crosier and keeps a large book with the names of each child under his arm, complete with designations on who has been naughty or nice (zoet or stout in Dutch tradition). As the American version of Santa Claus is based in large part on this Dutch tradition, Sinterklaas is also known for his great white beard.

Much as Santa Claus relies on the assistance of his elves to deliver gifts to all the world's children, Sinterklaas employs a number of helpers known as Zwarte Pieten. Known for their black faces and colorful 16th century clothing, the Zwarte Pieten actually found their beginnings in a Middle Ages tale about the devil. The original legend stated that on the eve of Saint Nicholas' feast day the devil was enslaved, evil was overcome and Zwarte Piet (Black Peter) came to serve Saint Nicholas. In recent centuries, the legend came to state that the Zwarte Pieten's faces are black with soot from sliding down chimneys to deliver gifts. Within the last few years, efforts have been made to incorporate helpers with different colored faces into the legend, explained by Sinterklaas passing through a rainbow in his boat. In Curacao, keep your eye out for these playful helpers during the holiday and you may be rewarded with a special treat.

Dutch tradition always held that Sinterklaas sailed each year from Spain and was greeted with great fanfare upon his arrival. In Curacao, this tradition remains intact and represents one of the island's most exciting events for locals and tourists alike. A few weeks before the feast day, Sinterklaas will make his scheduled arrival to the island. Immediately afterwards, Sinterklaas and his helpers lead a parade through the streets, handing out treats along the way. In the weeks leading up to Saint Nicholas Day, Sinterklaas can be seen throughout Curacao in shopping centers and resorts, interacting with excited children and curious adults. As a result of the holiday, many resorts and tourist destinations feature special events during the season and tourists are always encouraged to participate.

If you visit Curacao with your family during this holiday season, you can also participate in the gift giving traditions of Saint Nicholas Day. While Sinterklaas is in Curacao, it is customary for children to leave their shoes near the chimney or front door each night. Current holiday tradition still holds that Sinterklaas and his helpers make a flight each night and drop candy and other small gifts down each chimney into the shoes. You can also celebrate the feast day of St. Nicholas by creating either a 'present evening' on the eve of the holiday or receiving gifts from Sinterklaas on the following morning.

In Dutch tradition, families often hear a knock at the door and find a sack of presents outside for the whole family. If you are staying at a resort in Curacao during the holiday, the resort staff will be able to help you celebrate this traditional holiday with your family.
As Saint Nicholas Day falls in the heart of Curacao's tourism season, there isn't a better time to visit the island. During your time in Curacao, join in on the celebration and add a little Old World tradition to your Caribbean holiday.

When You Want To See Them All, Go To Kenya Safari

6:26 AM

Although there is a large market for competition with other African countries, Kenya still assumes its top place in harboring visitors from all over the world. Much of Kenya is usually deemed as safari, which in turn made it famous.

Even before the birth of other countries to compete for tourist market, Kenya has already emerged as the pioneer. During its discovery, famous people such as President Roosevelt, Prince Edward, Ernest Hemmingway and the likes have already explored the safaris of Kenya. This created a snob appeal though. In a sense, the big people went to Kenya safari because the world expects them to while those who have the resources to travel do because it seemed to be one of the certifications to reach the 'up society'.

In our modern-day however, Kenya safari is already open for all people who are willing to enjoy wildlife and culture.

Because of its unfailing guarantee to have you experience the big five (namely lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) its fame is unequalled by any other regions who themselves offer other wonders. Kenya ecosystems cover an array of other substantial members of the savanna.

Kenya safari does not only rely its fame on its vast resources for wildlife, it is also known for its kaleidoscopic landscapes which are characterized with highlands, rift valley, grasslands, moonscape at the north and the snow capped, magnificent Mount Kenya.

Considering the over 50 wildlife reserves and national parks, it would be impossible for one visitor to not love any of them. It is off course expected that one cannot visit all them in a single trip. So unless you have all the resources to travel and take the off beaten tracks, it would be best if you would plan your trip well and organize your voyage so you may get the bests of all worlds.

For travelers with limited budget, your best bets would be Amboseli, Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Samburu, Aberdares, and Tsavo. And for those who have time and money, you may explore great laces such as Kakamega Forest, Meru, Marsabit, Mount Elgon, Mount Kenya, and Shimba Hills.

Even with a big budget or low, Maasai Mara is still a definite stop over. This is the place where all filming of wildlife in Kenya are created. This haven of wildlife offers immense varieties of animal species that it would be hard to believe that they are all contained in a single place.

All of these perhaps contribute to the perception that wildlife lovers should and must visit Kenya safaris at least one time in their lives so as to witness a great part of the creation.

Build Your Own Travel Business At Home

6:27 AM

Do you like to travel? Would you like to travel more? Would you travel more if you could find some real bargains, say 50% or more off the regular retail price, not just the 10% AARP or 10% business discount often available at motels?

If you do like to travel, I'm sure you have gone the route of search-engine searches for discount travel, only to find the major Internet booking engines with their flashy 'lowest prices guaranteed' all offer exactly the same prices.

The truth be known, some bargains do raise their heads above all the 'cheapest prices guaranteed' but good luck finding them. You must tenaciously search every day, and even then some of those specials are alive for only a few hours. Is there an easier way? I think there is, and you can turn travel into business.

Yes, those bargains are there, reserved for the travel professional in the form of travel perks, business tax deductions and sales commissions. Consider these points:

-Own your own booking engine and earn commissions on all travel booked through your site -- your own travel and the travel of anyone and everyone that you can drive to your booking engine.

-Operate a legitimate travel business and you can apply business tax deductions to your own travel as long as you include that travel in your business plan, and you keep accurate records.

-Many travel industry businesses offer familiarization trips, FAM trips for short, to professional travel agents and agencies so that they can then 'sell' these services to their clients. These FAM trips may offer huge discounts or free accommodations and trips when the agent books 8-10 clients for the same accommodation or trip.

-Travel agents can build their own FAM trips calling the travel vendor directly, offering some form of advertisement back home, and requesting travel professional discounts.

This month my wife and I are taking a quick summer vacation to Canon City, Colorado, for a ? day white-water rafting adventure in Bighorn Sheep Canyon and a 2-hour train ride in a vista-dome through the Royal Gorge. We have acquired two nights' lodging because we want to further explore the business opportunities in the area. We contacted the vendors as travel professional with an offer to do a write-up on their company and publish it on the Internet. In return we received ? off the raft trip and the lodging and complimentary tickets for two for the train ride. After applying business tax deductions, we estimate that we will realize close to a 70% savings or $300 on this one very short trip. Not too shabby!

You can indeed travel for less and travel more. In fact, your travel can become your job. What a great life!

timeshare information

6:26 AM

For many years now timeshares have been a booming industry in the travel and vacation market. The idea behind them is that you can buy 1 to 4 weeks per year of a timeshare. You become an owner with a title that is transferable to your heirs. It can be sold or held indefinitely. Most time shares come with an option to buy into a travel club that lets you trade your weeks where you purchased for weeks at comparable destinations elsewhere in the United States or world. This option normally requires the payment of an annual fee to stay with the travel club.

If you believe that you will prefer vacations in a timeshare over motel or hotel rooms, then this may be a good option for you. Once you pay for the timeshare, you can stay during your weeks for free each year. An annual maintenance fee is charged to pay for upkeep of the property. If you stay in upscale accommodations, the fee will be considerably less than hotel costs. If you stay in low end establishments, then the fee will be more than your vacations would cost without the timeshare.

You really need to buy the travel club option to get maximum use from your timeshare unless you plan on only vacationing at the same place for the next 20 or so years. Don't buy a timeshare if you haven't purchased a house or property to build on at retirement. You need to take care of permanent living quarters before committing to tens of thousands of dollars for a good timeshare.

Buy a timeshare when you are sure that the annual fees along with the payments are not going to sink your financial ship. The argument here is that even if these costs are only equal to your vacation costs, you have to pay them, but you don't have to take a big vacation is money is tight. In fact, if you can't pay cash or pay off the property within a couple of years, don't buy it. The risk for buying an optional purchase is too great.

Before you buy into a timeshare, explore the option of buying one directly from a current owner. If they have owned it for a few years, you may be able to buy it for a significant discount and still give them what they paid for it or maybe a little more. Everyone will be happy. Also, check to see how many owners are trying to sell. If too many are trying to unload the timeshare you're looking into, it's not a good sign of good value.

Don't buy a timeshare when you are being pressured. They may tell you today or not at all for a certain priced offering. This is rarely true. If they can offer it today, they can offer it tomorrow or a week from now. If they can't, you probably don't want to do business there anyway.

Traveling To Hawaii? 5 Important Tips

6:26 AM

Whether you are going on a family vacation, a spring break vacation with college friends, or even your honeymoon, Hawaii is a great place to visit at any time of year. While Hawaii is a great travel destination, you may want to know a bit about this place before you land. The following are some important tips that can help you have a great time while you are in Hawaii.

Tip #1 - No Touching a Nene - A Nene is the Hawaii state bird, and while they may look cute, they can be very defensive, especially if they have babies. These birds are also endangered species, so even if they look cute, touching or even approaching these birds are against the law. Be sure to keep this in mind when traveling to Hawaii or you may end up with a hefty fine.

Tip #2 - Get the Flower Lei Greeting - One of the most exciting experiences to enjoy in Hawaii is the flower lei greeting, but some vacation packages may not have this greeting included. Before you make your final arrangements for your trip, make sure that you will get the flower lei greeting when you land in Hawaii. It is a great experience and no trip to Hawaii is complete without it.

Tip #3 - Avoid Sunburn - When you are in Hawaii, chances are that you will be out in the sun a great deal. Many travelers forget to wear sunscreen and end up getting burned. It is best to wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn from occurring, but if you do end up with a burn, Aloe Vera gel and lidocaine are great for getting rid of the burn.

Tip #4 - Pack a Sweater or Jacket - While Hawaii is generally quite warm during the day time, at night it can get a bit cooler. You may want to pack a sweater or a light jacket when you go to Hawaii, just in case the night turns cool and you need something warmer to wear. If wearing a jacket is not your style, make sure you pack a few shirts that have longer sleeves and are a bit warmer than what you would usually wear during the day so you are comfortable during the evenings.

Tip #5 - Take an Umbrella - If you are visiting Hawaii between October and May, you will probably want to pack an umbrella. During this time of the year, Hawaii gets a great deal of rain, and although showers do not last long, more than likely you will get caught in one at some point. Unless you love walking or running in the rain, you will need to have an umbrella just in case.

Some of the best holiday memories involve laughter. So, just think of the odds for laughter if you book a family vacation to the Colorado mountains? Picture yourself laughing over supper with your loved one as you reminisce about the foibles of negotiating the bunny hill for the first time.

Parlay that over into a night in the audience while comedians make light of themselves and everything else and you are bound to tuck yourself in at night with a smile on your face. And isn't that what vacations are all about?

All in all, with the variety of hotels available here and the number of different experiences that they put at your disposal, you'd be remiss to neglect giving this travel destination a good second thought.

My mom always used to say that home should put a smile on your face. She was right, which is why I call Aspen Colorado lodging one of my homes away from home!

A Guide To Costa Blanca Weather

6:26 AM

The Costa Blanca weather is mild year round. This is one of the driest areas in all of Spain. The southern part of this region, the area below Alicante, has the mildest and driest climate. The southern region enjoys about three hundred days of sunshine each year.

The climate in this region is very good for your health. In fact, the World Health Organization has said that this area has one of the healthiest overall climates in the world. This is due to the abundant sunshine and mild winter temperatures. There aren't extreme cold or weather fluctuations in the area.

Seasonal Costa Blanca Weather

Weather in Winter

The winter climate is very mild in this region. The temperatures are much more comfortable than in other areas of Europe. The average temperatures in the winter range from 8 degrees Celsius (45 Fahrenheit) and temperatures in the lower 60s are not uncommon. It is still comfortable enough to spend time outside throughout the winter. In some warmer areas, people can still be found using the beaches.

The beautiful climate in the winter has been attracting an increasing number of retired people to the area. People from Scandinavia, the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Austria have been relocating to the Costa Blanca. Some only spend the winter in the area because it is so much warmer than in their home countries.

Weather in Spring

The weather in the spring can be rainy at times. There isn't as much rain as in autumn, but it isn't as dry as the summer or winter. The temperatures in the spring ranges from 20 to 27 degrees Celsius during the daytime. Night temperatures are between 16 and 20.

In the Springtime, the almond blossoms are in bloom. The white almond blossoms are what give this region the name, Costa Blanca, or the white coast. Many people believe the name comes from the beaches, but that isn't true. The name came from the abundant almond blossoms, which are beautiful in Spring.

Weather in Summer

The summer is the most popular time for vacations in this region. The hot, dry weather are perfect for enjoying time at the beach and other outdoor activities. The Costa Blanca has miles of beautiful beaches to enjoy in the summer. Golf vacations are popular at this time of year.

The climate in the summer is dry. There is very little rain. Temperatures are hot, with 32 degrees Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) being very common. Temperatures drop slightly in the evening, but it doesn't get cold. Nearly every day in the summer is the perfect beach day.

Weather in Autumn

The Costa Blanca and most areas along the Mediterranean coast experience more rain in the autumn than in other seasons. In this area, November is the wettest month of the year.

There are two sources of autumn rainfall in this region. The first is cold air from the north, which reaches the higher temperatures of the Mediterranean Sea. This increases convection, leading to heavy rainfall. Flooding is possible with these rains. The second is the cross Atlantic airflow, which gets stronger in autumn. This causes more active weather fronts.

Costa Blanca Weather Forecasts

Consider the climate in various seasons when planning a vacation to this region. Read weather forecasts for different seasons when planning your trip. Weather forecasts can be found on the internet through a variety of websites. Travel websites often have this information, as do worldwide weather sites.

Local newspapers are a good source of weather information. Some local papers are available on the internet for easy reading. A few are translated into English for non Spanish speaking tourists. Read archived papers to get an idea of the weather at various times of the year. This information is very useful in planning the perfect trip.

How To Get In And Out Of London Via Heathrow Airport

6:26 AM

How can you get in and out of one of the most exciting cities on Earth easily? Heathrow is a sprawling and unpleasant airport. Immigration from outside the EU can be a chore. The London transport system can be expensive. Here are a few tips to make the going easier:

Let's start on the way in. You've collected your bags from the carousel, got through immigration and made it into arrivals.

There are various transport options to central London; tube, black cab, mini cab, bus and train.

1. The London Underground, 'the tube', is the cheapest, but it can take an hour and a half if your destination at the other side of London. The tube has to stop at every station on its route. It can be crowded. It's great for short trips, or for commuting to work. For beginning or ending a holiday, it's wearisome.

2. Black cabs: Black cabs are also very good for short journeys; they are spacious, clean, and the drivers are professionals. They pay a lot of money for their licence, and are tested on their knowledge of London. They can be very expensive. A fee of $120 to get into central London would not be unusual, if the traffic is bad. The meter is running even when you're stopped.

3. Mini cabs: These guys charge flat-fee fares, so it's worth finding a few mini cab companies near Heathrow on the internet, and see if you can get someone to meet you in arrivals. They have to be booked in advance. You can't book them from the airport on the day, as getting into Heathrow and finding you can be a nightmare. Sometimes the customer may not show up, so it's not worth their time.

4. Bus: I'm not sure I'd use these at all. Being stuck in a traffic jam, in a bus, on a long journey, with the clock ticking is my definition of Purgatory. They're good for short hops or before the rush hour or late at night. Cheap as chips, but you pay for it in other ways.

5. The train: This is my favourite. There are two train services from Heathrow; Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect. The first takes fifteen minutes to Paddington, the second about half an hour. Both go to and from Paddington, which is a major terminus in the centre of London. Both are clean, and much faster than the tube. Spend a little more money, and be sure of getting where you want to go on time.

On the way back home, when you board the Heathrow Express in Paddington, you are fifteen minutes from Heathrow. The tube by contrast could take an hour or more. No contest, when you're fretting about getting checked-in on time!

It's worth considering whether you can fit all your luggage into one small case, which you can take on board as hand luggage. This means you can leave it until relatively late to check in. (Due to the new security measures, however, you can't cut it too fine; the queues at departure can be quite long.) Coupled with taking a train to the airport, this can make your journey a lot more pleasant. Plus you don't have to worry about your luggage going missing!

The Cheapest Days And Times To Book Your Vacation

6:27 AM

We all need a vacation now and again and heading to an exotic island or a snow covered mountain might be just what the doctor ordered. However, the high prices of vacation getaways generally keep the majority of the population at home or taking the same boring vacation year after year. However, did you know that you can book the vacation of your dreams and save a lot of money? That is right, all you have to do is check on your dream vacation package and book it on the cheapest days for that destination, and you will save hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Where will you find this information? Online, of course!

The Off Season

Every destination has an off season, or a period of the year when prices go down. The off season might be due to the weather or the flux of tourists, but regardless there are off season rates for whatever destination you are considering. What you need to do to find off season rates is learn when the off season is for your particular vacation destination. This is generally very easy and all you need to do is check online. In fact, there are many websites for hotels, airlines, tour operators and the like in your vacation destination that will tell you up front the high season and low season rates. Then, you can simply determine what dates during the off season you would like to travel and book your vacation. You will save a significant amount of money and enjoy the vacation with less tourists, more hotel attention, and will love the fact that you chose to travel in the off season.

Many individuals have a poor conception of off season travel because they believe it is a bad time to visit the specific location and they won't enjoy that particular vacation during the off season. This is not necessarily the case and many times the high season is determined by when the tourists show up in hoards. For example, June through August is high season at most beaches in the United States, however this is considered off season for parts of South America and their beaches. Of course, down south the sun is still shining and the weather beautiful, but hotel rates and even airline rates are considerably lower. Because of this, when you want to take a great vacation figure out your budget, do a little research, and before you know it you will find the off season rates for the destination of your dreams that you can finally afford!

An Introduction To Tuscany Italy

6:26 AM

Tuscany, Italy is the place that movies are filmed and fantasies run wild. Perhaps it is the cities of Florence, Pisa, or Livorno that invoke feelings of culture, art, or arouse the senses to the smells and taste of the Chianti region. The fact is that Tuscany is home to some of the most famous tourist destinations in Italy. It is here that budding artists come to learn from the masters. It is here that the world of fashion takes it cues. And it is in Tuscany that romantics rekindle the flame and celebrate their love.

The Cities of Tuscany

Florence is perhaps one of the most famous cities in the area known as Tuscany. The Uffizi museum after all is home to such masterpieces as 'The Birth of Venus.' Originally built to house the Tuscan administrative offices, the top floor now houses masterpieces by Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Caravaggio. Each visitor to Florence must also stop in and gaze at Michelangelo's 'David,' on display at the oldest art academy, the Galleria dell'Accademia. The Ponte Vecchio is a landmark that literally translated means 'old bridge.' It was built in the 1300s and has withstood floods and wars in order to continue to hawk some of the world's most wonderful 18 and 24k gold products and leather goods.

Chianti is known for its wines which are famous around the world. Tourists to Tuscany can enjoy the world's finest wines while enjoying the picturesque countryside.

Siena, also located in the Chianti region houses a gothic cathedral and paintings by medieval masters, Duccio and Simone Martini. The Renaissance and Etruscan history are evident in each landmark of the region.

Piza is best known for the Leaning Tower whose construction began in the 12th century, but starting sinking into the ground after only 3 stories were completed. It stood this way for 90 years and was finally completed by the son of Andreo Pisano, Tommano Simone and Giovanni de Simone almost 200 years after it was started.

Hillsides and Waysides

Part of the beauty and mystique of Tuscany is its countryside. The rolling hills that slope down to the coast are dotted with vineyards and villas. There are working farms and vacation villas suitable for the most adventurous tourists or those who demand first class accommodations. Tuscany car rentals allow tourists to explore each tiny village at their own pace and on their own schedule.

The Heart of Commerce

Emerging as a real business centre, Tuscany is home to thriving businesses in the furniture, leather, fashion, and manufacturing industries. These businesses keep the region in the 21st century while the people and culture keep one foot in the past.

If romance, tradition and culture are your idea of an ideal vacation, then Tuscany is for you. On the other hand if shopping and the face pace of a thriving city are your style then you will also find it in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Make your vacations affordable and enjoyable with vacation house rentals

6:27 AM

Vacation house rentals are a relatively new concept to many people in the UK and the US, though the facility is highly popular in some parts of Europe. In fact, it would be no exaggeration to say that vacation house rentals are one of the best kept secrets of the travel industry in the US. So, let us take a quick look at what these are and how you can benefit from this facility.

Vacation house rentals are nothing but homes that can be rented. Many property owners in prime tourist destinations rent out their property to tourists. These owners generally depend on a manager to rent out their properties. Sometimes, they independently put up their rentals on search engines too. Vacationers can get the relevant information by contacting realtors in the area or through the Internet. Vacation house rentals fetch home owners a neat side income. But, what's in it for the vacationers?

Imagine staying in a fully furnished home of your liking, with all the amenities and comforts you want, located in a convenient and accessible area of your choice, priced about 25-80% below the price of a hotel room! And the best part is the fact that vacation house rentals are available in the most unlikely of places, even in beautiful nooks and unexplored crannies where you wouldn't find hotels and resorts.

These days, vacation house rentals are available in just about every touristy part of the US, UK and Europe. Whether you want a beachfront villa or a log cabin, a condo or a penthouse, you can easily find the accommodation of choice in your dream destination. So, you get more value for your money, more space, more amenities and ultimately, more satisfaction.

Depending on your budget, you can find vacation house rentals of your choice. From one room cabins to spacious beach villas and luxury ski slope condos, the choice is amazing. You can also decide on the accommodation based on the amenities that are offered. While some vacation house rentals provide only basic amenities like a usable kitchen and living space, others are much more lavish in their offerings. You can get anything ranging from high speed internet access, spa, Jacuzzi to designer gourmet kitchen, entertainment centers and regular maid services. So, you can choose the size and amenities depending on your budget and requirements.

Vacation house rentals are let out for a number of days or a week or even for a month. Most rentals offer you good discounts when you book for longer time slabs. You can also avail of attractive discounts when you book during the off season. So, there you have it, the skinny on vacation rentals.

Most travel enthusiasts cringe at the sheer discomfort caused by cramped hotel rooms. Even reputed hotels do not offer you the expected return on your investment. Vacation house rentals, on the other hand, bring you the best of both worlds. They allow you to visit new places and enjoy new experiences while adding that much needed warmth and joy of beautiful, spacious, homely living.
