Hassle-free Backpacking In Europe
6:28 AMThinking about going backpacking in Europe alone, with your sweetie, or a buddy? Instead of just grabbing your backpack and hopping on the first plane out to a random European country, it's worth your while to plan a little bit ahead and figure out what you need in order to have a successful, hassle-free, and exciting European backpacking trip.
Pick a Destination
Some people choose to go into Europe blindly without a plan or destination in mind, but it's best if you have an idea of where you'd like to go backpacking. Some stick to Western Europe, some to Eastern Europe, some traverse the entire continent on a rail pass, and others explore one or two countries more intimately. Your destination(s) will also determine your budget, gear, and other factors.
Budget
Make sure to plan an overall budget for your backpacking trip. Your budget will include your flight, your gear (all the stuff you need to buy before you go), and your 'living expenses' by the day, which will include food, accommodations, and activities. Around $40 USD is fairly realistic, but this will vary from country to country and even city to city. Do some research to find out how much it will cost you in the countries/cities you wish to visit. Find out the exchange rate as well, and keep a journal of your expenses.
Get your Gear
Think you can go backpacking in Europe with nothing but the shirt on your back? Think again. There are a few fundamental elements you'll need to take with you on your backpacking trip. First and foremost, a durable, high-quality, side-loader backpack that fits you is a must. You'll also need several travel shoes (you'll be doing a lot of walking), a money belt (with your money), all your necessary travel documents, a European guidebook and phrasebook, a journal, a camera, a water bottle, camping gear (if applicable), and more (neck pillow, basic clothing, a few toiletries).
Accommodations & Transportation
Hostels are the accommodations of choice for backpackers in Europe. Try to make arrangements (at least some) ahead of time. This way you'll be able to find the best deals and you'll have a spot reserved for you.
Look for cheap flights to Europe (search online or go through your travel agent)-student travel agencies and student airfare finders are great places to start. Get a rail pass when you're in Europe, especially if your backpacking adventure takes you through several countries. Subways make a great option, too.
Learn Lingo
Although much of Europe speaks English as a second (or third or fourth or fifth) language, it's helpful for you to learn a few key phrases in the languages of the countries you'll be visiting.

If you will be traveling with adults or even mature teenagers, you and your traveling party may enjoy a kayaking adventure to the twin islands of Mokulua and Mokumanu. These islands, located about a mile from the shores of Lanikai Beach, are beautiful bird sanctuaries that many vacationers enjoy visiting.
In addition to visiting the islands of Mokulua and Mokumanu, there are a number of other attractions that you may find enjoyable in or around the Lanikai area. These attractions include golf courses, parks, fine dining restaurants, and shopping centers. For more information on what you can do and see when visiting Lanikai Beach, you will want to request Hawaiian vacation brochures, namely those for Oahu. Many of these travel guides can be requested free of charge.
The above mentioned steps are just a few of the many steps that you should take, should you decide to take a Lanikai Beach vacation. As a reminder, preplanning your vacation, especially well in advance, can help to ensure that you have the Hawaiian vacation of your dreams.

Paraiso De La Bonita Riviera Maya Mexico
6:27 AMFrom the moment we arrived at the airport, to the wonderfully reassuring sight of a man, our man, standing with a board and our names were on it, it was impeccable service all the way. Our driver, in a lovely Lincoln Navigator, offered us not only water, but cold wet towels, and our choice of music for the short drive to Paraiso de la Bonita.
Now we are talking about an expensive resort here so we would expect great service from the staff at the Paraiso de la Bonita, and we were not disappointed. It would be true to say the service was attentive, and understated, in fact exactly what to expect from this standard of resort.
I have to say we were probably lucky because our visit was in May, and low season had arrived, so we were upgraded to a luxury suite with the works, not to put too fine a point on it. The suite had a king sized bed, and a plunge pool which was the icing on the cake. A great bathroom, with large tub and shower, good toiletries, nice sitting room.
The staff were excellent, in that they were very friendly although the service could be a little slow at times, despite the fact I understand the ratio is two staff to one guest. Anything you need they are more than glad to supply. They remember your name, bring you gifts each night on your pillow.
The beach is very sheltered by the reef, so there isn't much in the way of waves, and that I believe was the cause of the amount of seaweed, although the beach was cleaned every morning. Sadly the weed kind of prevented you from swimming off the beach.
To be fair we didn't use the beach much, because there is a large deck to lie out on, and you can swim off that and there is no seaweed.
The food at Paraiso was great. We were very impressed with the menus and enjoyed what they offered. The Guacamole and Risotto were especially good and fresh. The wine selection is good, and the variety of food throughout the day is great..
Free tea and coffee was served daily in the library which was a really cool place to chill out in, have a drink, read and use the internet for free.
The pool was surrounded by luscious plants and had a large jaccuzzi tub in as well comfortable sunloungers as wide as a double bed. The cocktails and service were great from the pool bar, which had a great atmosphere especially around sunset where people congregated for pre dinner drinks.
Overall the Paraiso de la Bonita is well worth staying at.

Hello From Montreal: The Old Montreal Ghost Walking Tour
6:27 AMAfter an enjoyable dinner at Modavie I was ready to head to my next scheduled activity: a ghost tour of Old Montreal. Old Montreal Ghosts or Les Fantomes de Vieux Montreal was founded about 8 years ago by a local Montrealer, Eric Poulin, who got the idea for a ghost tour on one of his travels to London. Recently he has started to collaborate with Louise H?bert, owner of Guidatour and a very experienced tourism entrepreneur who has won numerous prizes from Quebec Tourism and in 2005 was also honoured as one of Chatelaine Magazine Top Ten Women of the Year. Both entrepreneurs together combined to provide a special experience in Old Montreal.
Old Montreal Ghosts offers a variety of tours: a traditional ghost walk that introduces visitors to the streets, alleyways and piers of Old Montreal, to the locations of many historical events including fires, ghost appearances, political gatherings, hangings, crimes, heroic acts and unexplained facts. The Montreal Historical Crimes Tour makes visitors relive some of Montreal's most famous crimes through the testimony of victims and criminals.
I was going to partake of the New France Ghost Hunt, with characters dating back to the founding times of Montreal. Another ghost tour focuses on the Port area while a Scavenger Hunt is also offered where competing teams have to find answers to rally questions.
Based on these interesting offerings, I was sure a special experience was waiting for me. So just before 8:30 pm I went to a booth on Jacques Cartier Quay in the Old Port of Montreal to participate in the New France Ghost Hunt. Quebec was part of New France and Montreal's French regime lasted from 1642, the founding of Montreal, to 1760, when France conceded its overseas territories to Great Britain in 1763 at the end of the Seven Years War. The ghosts we would be meeting tonight would date back to that era.
Two ghost tours were being offered tonight: one in French and one in English. Together with a family from Battle Creek, Michigan, and another family from Boston I was ready to go searching for Montreal's ghosts. A lady dressed in a late-medieval costume called us together and explained to us how the tour would work. She handed out some critical accessories: a flag of New France as well as a lantern and designated a tour leader who would have to coordinate our efforts.
She gave us maps of Old Montreal that contained 4 stops at each of which we would have to locate the resident ghost and call him or her by chanting 'Long live the King of France'. This would make the ghost appear. And off she sent us on our treasure hunt for the ghosts of Old Montreal.
Well, it was a beautiful evening and hundreds of people on the outdoor restaurant patios on Place Jacques Cartier could attest to that. Our first ghost destination was located at Champ-de-Mars, a former parade ground for military manoeuvres, and since 1991 a place where the old fortifications of Montreal have been revealed. We went through our ghost calling ceremony and sure enough, the ghost of a young man appeared, telling us stories of young forbidden love, arson and his early death. He was a rather charming ghost that endeared himself to his audience with his French-Canadian accent and his bright smile.
Our next ghost location was just south of Montreal's City Hall, in the Place de la Dauversi?re, a public square next to Place Jacques Cartier that holds several works of public art as well as a statue of one of Montreal's most famous mayors, Jean Drapeau. Place Jacques Cartier itself at one point held a public market and a statue of British Admiral Nelson overlooks the square, however, the famous admiral interestingly faces away from the port area.
Having arrived at the proper spot, we were able to call up a young female ghost who told us tales of her voyage to North America and her love story with one of the sailors. She was also reaped away by an untimely death and her expressive playful demeanor was fitting for such a young girlish ghost.
Then we crossed Place Jacques Cartier and strolled to Cours Le Royer, a complex of huge warehouses that used to be the property of the religieuses hospitali?res (nursing sisters) of Saint-Joseph, an order of nuns who rented out the warehouses to importers to generate revenue for their organization. The complex was built between 1860 and 1871 and features a cobble-stoned alley between the warehouses.
After some searching we found another ghost and went through our ghost calling ritual. A young male ghost talked to us of his journey to the New World and how he came into conflict with the authorities. In gruesome detail he depicted the torture techniques that were used at the time of the French regime. This ghost was the most scary of all and his anger at his fate was palpable. When he was finished telling us his story we started to proceed to search for our fourth and final ghost. As I looked back, this ghost was still standing on the rue Saint-Sulpice and his haunting gaze kept following our group, sending a chill up our spine.
Finally, on Place d'Armes, after a long search, we were able to find our last ghost. He was one of the 'coureurs du bois', young men that used to venture deep into Native territory in order to negotiate with Indian tribes who were supplying fur to the merchants of New France. His stories made the early years of fur trading in wild and uncharted lands come to life.
Each of these ghosts shed light on a different aspect of life in New France in the 17th and 18th century, a time when adventure and danger were part of daily life. Our tour finished around 10 pm, a perfect time for me to walk back through the safe streets of Montreal to write up today's experiences and catch some sleep for my adventures tomorrow: a walking tour of Old Montreal.

Hello From The Kawarthas - Early Fall Colours, Scarecrows & Frogmen
6:27 AMFall is one of the most beautiful seasons in Ontario when forests light up in hues of yellow, orange and red. It's the perfect time for drives in the countryside, to visit small villages, check out farmer's markets, attend country fairs. We've had a long hot summer this year, even as I write this we are expecting temperatures 10 degrees Celsius above average. As a result the fall colour season is a little delayed, but that did not change the fact that it was time for a country driving tour.
During the Servas conference in Vancouver I made a great connection, I met a fellow Ontarian, a lady in her 50s by the name of Julie who lives north of Peterborough in Ontario's Lake Country. And as is the Servas tradition, she generously offered her hospitality and invited me to come up and visit her on Buckhorn Lake. I left on Saturday at around 4 pm and although I got lost a couple of times, barely two hours later I arrived at her beautiful house on Buckhorn Lake.
We spent a fabulous evening chatting and cooking a meal together that was so delicious that I packed in two big servings. We talked about many topics and touched on the transitions of life, who we really are when you strip away job titles, material possessions, our affiliations with our marriage partners - what is really left at the end of the day. It was a really interesting discussion, I always enjoy conversing with people who have more life experience than I do.
Not surprisingly, Julie is a very interesting individual, she is a 'diversity expert' and teaches organizations how to deal effectively with a multi-cultural workforce. She also participates in a variety of volunteer organizations (including Servas), plays tennis and volleyball, goes for long hikes, canoes, plays the piano, sings in a choir, to name just a few of her activities. I asked her if she ever gets lonely in the tranquility of Lake Country, after having lived most of her life in the metropolitan hub of Toronto. The answer was a definitive no, and once I heard of all her activities I realized that with such an active social calendar it would be very difficult to feel lonely or get bored.
What's always great about a personal visit is connecting with a local expert, who really knows the area. Julie took me on a little driving tour of her neck of the woods (literally) and showed me some of her favourite spots, which include Fothergill Island, the Gannon Narrows Conservation Area and the country drive to the village of Buckhorn.
The Kawartha area is full of lakes, many of which are connected and form part of the Trent-Severn Waterway System that connects Lake Ontario with Georgian Bay, part of Lake Huron, over a distance of 387 km through a serious of lift locks. The Kawarthas are one of the three main popular getaway areas for Ontarians which include Muskoka, the Haliburton Highlands, and the Kawarthas. During our drive Julie pointed out one of the landlocked lakes that is not connected to the lock system, Sandy Lake, which has a bottom of sand and clay, resulting in an often turqouise appearance, somewhat reminiscent of famous Lake Louise in Western Canada. Sandy Lake is a very popular spot for vacation homes and the entire Kawartha area boasts thousands of cottages, camps and resorts, from simple house-keeping cottages to luxury resorts and conference centres.
Of course fall is harvest time as well, Halloween is approaching too, and one of the big autumn pastimes in cottage country seems to be the creation of all forms of scarecrows. They were all over the place, in front of private homes, bed & breakfasts, schools, community centres, churches, even on bridges, and I started snapping away with my camera to document this rural creativity. My favourite scarecrow encounters included a wedding scene, 'breakfast in bed' in front of a B&B, and some 'scarecrow hoodlums' climbing the fence of a baseball diamond.
After saying goodbye to Julie and thanking her for her great hospitality, I decided to do a little loop around Buckhorn Lake and I checked out the village of Burleigh Falls. I got out of the car and walked down on the flat rocks beside the river which descends in cascades into Stoney Lake. Burleigh Falls is a cute little hamlet located at the confluence of Lovesick Lake and Stoney Lake, and has a few restaurants and a variety of other accommodations.
One thing I did not realize is that Stoney Lake is a local scuba diving spot. As I walked past the cascades and arrived at a little clearing, I saw a scuba diver in full gear coming out of the water. He explained to me that there were problably about 20 or so divers in the lake, and that they explore the rocky lake bottom which apparently also includes a deep trench.
From Burleigh Falls I continued my path south and stopped at Youngs Point, which houses one of the locks of the Trent-Severn Waterway System. This little town marks the start of the Canadian Shield and was settled in 1825. The original lock here was built in the early 1870's. I stopped at the Lockside Trading Company, which offers cottage country apparel, home furnishings, a variety of souvenirs and home decorating items, as well as some of the famous Kawartha Dairy icecream, which of course I had to taste.
Youngs Point was my last stop on my way home, although I drove through a series of cute villages including Lakefield, Bridgenorth and Port Perry. I thoroughly enjoyed the drive through the rolling hills of this agricultural land northeast of Toronto. The feeling was apparently shared by a myriad of other travellers, some pulling boats on trailers, others riding on their motorcycles. All in all, it was a perfect early fall day and an ideal occasion to check out Toronto's backcountry.

Begin In Beijing - Beijing Travel Information
6:27 AMThe best way to kick off your Asian travels is in China's progressive and even tragically hip capital city of Beijing. Traditional relics like the Tiananmen gate stand juxtaposed against the imposing modernist architecture of recent history, most notable in the Dashanzi Art District. The People's Republic of China has its financial industries mainly in Shanghai and Hong Kong, but Beijing remains the nation's true cultural and political center.
Orange County Meets Ming Dynasty in Beijing
When many travelers think of Beijing, they imagine the dictatorial atmosphere of Mao Zedong or television images of protesting citizens; however, Beijing has a tremendous history beginning as early as the 1st century BCE and has persevered through Kublai Kahn's Mongols, Japanese invasion, and the Communist Civil War victory in 1949.
The Forbidden City is a fascinating journey through 500 years of Imperial secrecy. The head of state no longer resides here and the beautiful buildings and breathtaking gardens are open to the public year-round. The entrance to the Forbidden City is the infamous Tiananmen Square and gate, protected by four formidable marble lions. Nearby, the Temple of Heaven is another sublime representation of an era of dynasties and royal architecture. With airfare to Beijing, you also have the extra opportunity to see the Great Wall of China, which is only one and a half hours away by bus.
Although there are hundreds of historical sites in Beijing, the rapidly sprawling metropolis is also overflowing with contemporary wonders and luxuries. The National Zoo houses the largest inland aquarium in the world as well as China's famous pandas. Next to the Imperial Palace, the Wan Fung Art Gallery provides insight into the artistic transition from regal and traditional to cutting edge contemporary. Most interestingly, the suburban sprawl has witnessed the creation of a $60 million American-inspired community called Orange County, complete with town homes and tract housing.
Chinese Cultural Centrifuge in Beijing
Experience two cultural traditions in one at the Laoshe Tea House where you will be both charmed by Chinese opera and soothed by a variety of traditional teas. For world-class shopping in Beijing, visit Wangfujing, or you can find your way into the many enchanting smaller districts for traditional Chinese shops and boutiques. Beijing is also home to several notable temples like the Miaoying, and even a mosque that was built in 996.
With such dynamic experiences to offer and the immaculate preservation of its past, Beijing is truly an international city and there's no wonder the cosmopolis has been chosen for the Olympics. Get your airfare to Beijing now or wait for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Which London Hotels Are Close To Tube And Rail Stations?
6:27 AMChoosing London hotels based on location can make getting around during your vacation both simple and affordable. Renting a car while on vacation can be very costly. Between the rental fees, additional insurance, parking, and tollbooths, transportation expenses stack up quickly. Fortunately, public transportation is readily available in magnificent London and there are a number of hotels located just a short walking distance to various underground and rail stations. Because many of the city's attractions are also located close to these stations, sightseeing can be done quickly, easily, and affordably.
Unlike the roadways in the United States, the streets in London are tight and narrow, making them difficult to navigate. Excessive vehicles on the streets cause traffic congestion and delays. It is estimated that close to 250,000 automobiles circulate in the central zone of London every day. Speed during rush hour averages 10 miles per hour. Travelers can avoid much stress on their vacations and holidays if they skip the rental cars and opt for London's various public transportation systems.
'The Tube' is what Londoners call the London Underground (subway system). The Tube has 275 stations located throughout the city, many of which are in close proximity to both prominent hotels and popular attractions, such as museums, parks, theatres, and restaurants. The Tube operates 12 different lines throughout London, making it the fastest and easiest way to get around the city. It is the most popular mode of transportation for local residents. London's rail system operates similarly to The Tube, but runs above ground. By using The Tube or London Rail, travelers may cross the city quickly and be delivered within an easy walking distance to just about any of London's major attractions. Best of all, there are no traffic jams to cause delays, parking fees to pay, or surface streets to get lost on.
There are many London hotels in convenient locations. Most hotels are less than one kilometer (.6 miles) from several Tube stations and have at least one London Rail station located within the same distance. Additionally, vacationers can select a hotel based on its proximity to a certain park or museum and still enjoy other attractions that are located on the other side of the city. This opens up the entire city of London for exploration from one central location - a hotel room.
Museums are popular attractions for London visitors and there are several different museums dispersed amongst the city. History lovers may indulge in the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Architecture buffs can take in attractions such as the Tower Bridge, the Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace. London also features many parks and green areas: Hyde Park, Greenwich Park, and the Kew Gardens Royal Botanical Gardens. By choosing a hotel with easy access to a rail or Tube station, a traveler's biggest dilemma will be how to fit everything into one trip - not how to get from attraction to the next. London's public transportation system makes it easy to see the entire city and to quickly get from one point to the next.
Staying at a hotel with convenient access to rail (both ground and underground) transportation makes it possible to spend the entire day sightseeing around the city and then enjoy an evening of fine dining and theatre. And all of this activity can take place in opposite areas of the city.
Convenience does not have to come at a steep price. Sure, the money saved by foregoing the rental car could be used to splurge on a luxury hotel, but frugal vacationers have affordable lodging options as well. Hotels range in price from ?25 (approximately US $49) to ?441 (approximately US $862) and offer a number of different features and amenities. Several of the lower priced lodging options are B&B's or 2-star/diamond hotels. While their facilities and amenities may be minimal, the ambience of London is still unmistakable. Hotels in the higher price range are generally 4- and 5-star/diamond luxury hotels, with all modern amenities as well as some little extras to make the London visit even more enjoyable and memorable. Regardless of price or amenities, many hotels offer easy access to the London Rail and the Tube, as well as close proximity to many popular attractions.
With so many different accommodation options to choose from, selecting a hotel can be mind boggling. Holiday and vacation planners can benefit from using a website that offers information on several different London hotels, including price, location, and amenities. Some websites also provide data on the many London landmarks and attractions, as well as directions and transportation options for getting to the sights. Instead of researching hotels individually, travelers can look at options based on price, location, proximity to various attractions and destinations, or ratings. In addition to booking all reservations online through one website, vacationers may also take advantage of special offers and discounted pricing.
When selecting London hotels, making a decision based on location significantly increases the quality of the vacation or holiday. Staying in a hotel located near a London Rail or Tube station eliminates the need to rent a car while visiting London. Not only do travelers save money on rental charges, parking fees, fuel, and other automobile expenses, they can also enjoy more of what the city has to offer by avoiding traffic jams, automobile accidents, and construction zones. The Tube is the fastest and easiest way to get around London. With 275 stops and 12 lines, the Tube makes it possible to deliver passengers within a short walking distance to most hotels, museums, restaurants, theatres and hotels. The right hotel can be a portal to the many destinations of London.

How Not to See Everything (And Why You Don't Want To)
6:27 AMSo you're taking a European vacation. You've decided on a location, purchased your airline tickets, and booked your accommodations, whether it's a hotel in London, a short-term apartment in Florence, or Tuscany villa rental. You've taken care of the 'where' and the 'how.'
Now comes perhaps the most important question: what?
Namely, what locations are you going to visit, what sights are you going to see, and what activities are you going to participate in?
For many travelers, the answer is 'Everything!'
We'll call this the 'supermarket sweep' mentality. Given a limited amount of time, say two or three weeks, travelers feel compelled to pile as much as they possibly can into their metaphorical 'shopping carts.' The temptation is to schedule every hour of the day in advance to cram in every Roman ruin, French chateau, Greek temple, and hill town in Tuscany.
If this is your inclination, I'd invite you to stop a moment and reconsider. What is it, exactly, that you want out of a European vacation?
Above all, I think most of us want our vacation to be relaxing. We're going to Europe because we want to escape the hurried pace of our normal lives; to slow down a bit and enjoy life at another pace; to come home rested and rejuvenated. Nobody wants to spend his or her vacation feeling just as stressed as if they had never left work!
Secondly, most people travel to Europe because they are looking for an experience. They want to experience a way of life that is unique and different from their everyday American existence.
So how does trying to see and do 'everything' fit in with these two major goals? That's right... it doesn't! If you begin your European vacation with a checklist of 'famous sights,' you'll come home with a lot of pictures but no real emotional connection to the places you've been. You'll have spent your time running from one place to the next, worrying about whether you'll be able to catch the next bus rather than absorbing the significance of that historic monument you just flew by. You're also likely to get very bored along the way. After a while, the hundredth medieval masterpiece is going to look exactly like the first.
Conclusion? It's not so much what you do as how you do it. So here's how.
Number one: Slow down. Do not plan every day in advance. Of course, this doesn't mean you can't plan some things, but I'd suggest just picking a couple of major sights and aiming for those. As for everything else, educate yourself in advance, and then be flexible. This is especially true if you're renting a villa in the countryside. You don't want to spend your entire vacation in the car or on the train, after all! Set aside some time to hang out at your villa, or in a local village. Odds are, you'll meet some locals and strike up friendships that could last for a lifetime.
Number two: Stop. That's right. Stop. Find yourself a little cafe, a pizzeria, or a pub. Sit down. Order something. Now relax and enjoy your environment. Listen to the locals chatting, even if you can't understand the language. Talk to a stranger. Take a deep breath and remember the smell of freshly baked bread or slow-roasted lamb. Savor that glass of wine with your feet planted firmly on the fertile land from whence it came.
Number three: Savor. If you slow down and stop during your vacation, you'll reap the benefits immediately. If you don't have to be at point A at 10 o'clock sharp, Dad isn't going to blow up when he can't figure out the map, and Junior's emergency potty stop is not going to bring the entire vacation to a halt. More than that, when you discover something amazing, whether it's on your list of 'major interest points' or something you've stumbled on by chance, you can relax. You've got the leisure and the flexibility to spend all the time you like admiring it.
All right. Perhaps you're convinced. Perhaps you realize that a great vacation is not about 'seeing everything.' But you've only got so much time! You're worried that you're going to miss something important if you don't plan ahead!
Well, there's an easy answer to that. If you don't see everything, no problem. That just gives you the perfect excuse to go back next year!

Nocturne: Lighting Up The River Tyne
6:26 AMNocturne or 'The Light on the Tyne' is a colorful light artwork, which is on Newcastle's Queen Elizabeth II Bridge.
The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge carries the Tyne and Wear Metro across the River Tyne, between Newcastle and Gateshead. It was purpose-built to form a part of the Tyne and Wear public transport network at a cost of ?4.9million. The queen officially opened the bridge in 1981, although it had already been in use for some time.
Since 1980, Nexus, operators of the Tyne and Wear Metro, has been commissioning artwork to improve their customer's public transport experience. In 2006, they commissioned Nayan Kulkarni to install Nocturne, a huge artwork on the bridge. As the River Tyne's Millennium Bridge, Tyne Bridge, High Level and Swing Bridges were already illuminated, it was decided that this artwork should light up the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge too.
After observing the water below the bridge, Kulkarni decided to use colour-changing lights on Nocturne. He said: 'Like the slowly moving waters below the steelwork, I wanted to create a light work that would constantly change.'
To light the bridge, Nocturne uses 36 banks of LED lights, which are set within the steel structure of the bridge itself. Kulkarni decided to use LED lights, as they are compact, long lasting and energy efficient. In fact, the LEDs that illuminate Nocturne use less energy in a year than the amount used by an average British family.

For Nocturne, the bridge was painted with two distinctive shades of blue, which meant that the artwork could also be enjoyed during the day. However, it is during the evening that Nocturne really comes alive, as the bridge is bathed in a kaleidoscope of colored lights. The colors of the bridge's LED lights were based on photographs submitted by members of the public and this has given Kulkarni's artwork a real community focus.

Nocturne took 18 months to install and cost ?300,000 to create, but when you see the bridge lit up in all of its glory, you'll realise that it was worth every penny.

How Do The Reward Travel Credit Cards Work For Your Benefit?
6:27 AMYou must have heard at least once about reward travel points and benefits either on a television commercial or, if you are a frequent traveler yourself, from your travel agent or airline personal.
How Do Reward Travel Programs Work?
Reward travel is like an incentive or, better said, a reward given to you by the airline because you gave them your business and choose their airline to fly to your destination of choice. Most airlines will issue a frequent flyer a card, which looks similar to a credit card and through which you can add points every time you fly with that particular airline or the one they are partners with.
Travel points are usually calculated by the amount of miles you covered in one flight and are added to your account accordingly. Another way to gather reward travel points is through your credit card, as sometimes the same incentives are applied by your bank or Credit Card Company as well.
What Can You Get From Your Accumulated Reward Travel Points
Once you have accumulated a considerable number of points, you can use them to either purchase duty free items, hotel reservations, car rentals and so on; the list is endless, especially if the reward travel points are accredited to you by your bank and not the airline, as they usually have many more partners affiliated in this program at any one time.
With the accumulated points on an airline frequent flyer card you can usually get flight upgrades, which are a blessing if you have a long flight and are looking forward to relaxing and maybe get a little sleep as well; also, you may be allowed heavier bags than normal without having to pay for the extra weight.
Sometimes, airlines offer free flight for their frequent flyers with an upgraded membership with them; it does not happen often but it does happen and when it does it could very well be you if you start collecting your reward travel points from today.
Conclusion
You can accumulate reward travel points if you travel for business or pleasure and, thus, have the opportunity to shop, stay in a hotel or even fly for free from time to time, depending on the amount of points you gathered and/or the available programs from the airline.
You can start today as the membership and card are free. The only thing you have to remember is to always travel with the airlines that are included in the reward travel program and thus keep accumulating reward points.

Finding Cheap African Safari Tours
6:26 AMMany European people go to Africa to enjoy all there is to see. There are five star resorts and great entertainment and most hotels have access to some of the best safari companies in Africa. In America, people are beginning to catch on to the idea of visiting Africa.
A lot of the people that would like to go on a safari want to save money because the cost for Americans is substantially higher than for Europeans because of the cost of flight. Cheap African safari tours can be found however with a little searching and good decision making.
One way to look for different safari tours is by talking with a tour guide company. They are usually aware of any deals that are available. Sometimes people might cancel and a company tries to get new customers at the last minute. This saves the company money and it allows for cheap African safari tours for people who may be ready to book a trip at the last minute. The limitations of booking a cheap African safari tour will already be determined by the people who booked the trip originally. This is a great way to go on safari.
Options For Cheap African Safari Tours
For those people who will be booking a cheap African safari tour, consider all of the ways to cut costs that will allow for a great safari at a lower price. The easiest way to have a cheap African safari tour is to limit the length of the safari. Most safaris will last from as short of one day and can go as long as twelve days. The opportunity to see most of the wildlife is greater with a longer trip but booking a shorter trip doesn't mean that people will see fewer animals, and the money saved on the cheap African safari tours means that there is more spending money available for other options while in Africa.
Another way to defray costs is to book safaris that will specialize in looking for only certain animals. An example would be the safari company who along with full safaris also has safaris to see valley animals. They may offer a safari that concentrates on the big cats of Africa. This is a great way to see a lot in a shorter period of time making the vacation for cheap African safari tours a lifetime experience.
When people decide to go to Africa and see the wonders that are there to see, the costs of the safari shouldn't always be in the back of ones mind. Enjoy the beauty of the continent and save money and memories. Take a little piece of Africa home for the rest of ones life.

How To Have A Kauai Getaway - On A Budget
6:27 AMSo you want to visit Kauai, Hawaii, one of the most beautiful places on the earth, but it just doesn't seem possible financially. I've been there and it is certainly worth the visit, so it is just a matter of figuring out how to make it happen.
As you plan your getaway to Kauai, Hawaii, it would be wise to think about the best times of year to travel. I'm not talking about the weather; I'm talking about traveling during the least expensive time of the year. Numerous people dream of taking a vacation in Hawaii, and while the location of the islands makes it a gorgeous spot all year, there are periods of the year to vacation that are significantly less costly than others. If you know when to travel and different opportunities to save money, you should be able to have an incredible Hawaiian getaway on a budget.
Here are some examples. During the fall, when school has just gone back, is a great moment to travel because typically, airfares and hotel is less expensive. The low-season in Kauai is mid September through mid December and January through May. During the high-season air, car rental and hotel tend to go up, especially in the summer months. Many times this period of time can be full months in advance. Because of this, you should getaway during the low-season when you can get a bigger savings. What are some of the other benefits of traveling 'off-season'? Well, consider not having to share the small island with as many people or the exceptional weather that they have in Kauai year round. Seeing as Hawaii is one of the best locales for sunshine and vacation activities all year, there is not a compelling rationale not to visit in the off-season.
Beyond the considerable savings on your accommodations and airfare, here are a few other opportunities to keep the cash in your wallet.
More Ways to Save in Kauai
Rent a vacation home rental
Most people choose hotels in Kauai to enjoy for their vacation getaway. However, this is a more costly route and they don't present the same comforts and privacy that a villa or condo could offer. In additional, hotels in Kauai are extremely costly, considerably more so than an equivalent cost of renting a condo or home for a week or more. There are a tremendous amount of villas, homes and condos to rent on Kauai with amenities like ocean front view, tons of extra's, luxury kitchens, and so much more. in addition, there are villas, cottages and homes you could rent with anywhere from one to 8 bedrooms or more, accomadating just about any size group that you can bring with you.
Should you have an interest in renting a Kauai vacation home or villa, there are many places online that you can search to find a tremendous amount of options offered. This will allow you to locate the options that are the perfect size, with all the options you would like, without destroying that pocketbook. Don't forget that when you take your vacation will be key in how expensive, or inexpensive, it will be. Try to figure out a time to visit in the off-season when it will cost less than if you go in the middle of the primary travel season for Kauai.
Finally, consider other options while preparing and taking you Kauai vacation. Don't eat out every meal if you don't have it in the budget as that can get expensive. When you get to the island, visit the grocery store, pick up the items that you need to help keep you and the family fed for however long you are going to be on the island. Eating out 3 times a day gets expensive. The beauty of a vacation home rental is that you typically have a kitchen and a full size refrigerator. Eating out only one time every one to two days can save you hundreds of dollars over a week's time. Other ideas for cost savings are searching the web for travel discounts, being careful not to get the shopping bug while on the island and maybe just find a few keepsakes of your vacation.
If you put these things into practice for your Kauai getaway, it can potentially save you thousands of dollars over just a 7-14 day trip.

Who Were The First European Travel Writers?
6:27 AMTravel writing is a major genre. Go into any bookshop and see the vast array of travel writings aimed to appeal to every type and taste. There are food travel books for food enthusiasts, historical travelogues for the historians, humorous travel books for the irreverent, and every other imaginable slant on travel. But where did this interest in the travels of others begin?
One of the earliest European travel accounts, where the writer traveled for the sake of travel and wrote about it afterwards was written, oddly enough, not during the heydays of Greece or Rome but in the year 1336 A.D. Petrarch, an Italian scholar, poet and one of the earliest Renaissance humanists -- the man credited with perfecting the sonnet and making it one of the most perfect art forms to date -- climbed Mount Ventoux and wrote about it afterwards. It was a climb that resulted in far more than just the view he described or his account of the satisfaction of reaching the top. He introduced an entire new activity to humanity: travel writing.
True to the genre as well, Petrarch was critical of his fellow travelers or, in this case, those who refused to accompany him. He described his companions who stayed at the bottom of the slope frigida incuriositas, an insult that fell just short of calling them stupid. A loose translation is 'people with a cold lack of curiosity'. Petrarch not only talked of the toil involved in reaching the peak but went a little overboard, by today's standard, making allegorical comparisons between climbing the mountain and his own moral progress in life. It was a sort of vertical Pilgrim's Progress, but it would be several centuries before John Bunyan followed Petrarch's lead.
Then there was Michault Taillement, a poet for the Duke of Burgundy, who traveled through the Jura Mountains in 1430 and diarized his personal reflections, which included naked terror when confronted by sheer rock faces and blind fear when observing cascading waterfalls.
In the same era Antoine de la Sale, author of Petit Jehan de Saintre, climbed to the crater of a volcano in the Lipari Islands in 1407 and recorded his impressions. He put his impulse to undertake the climb to 'councils of mad youth'.
In the mid 15th century Gilles de Bouvier gave a delightful explanation of why one should travel and write. In his Livre de la description des pays he wrote: ' Because many people of diverse nations and countries delight and take pleasure, as I have done in times past, in seeing the world and things therein, and also because many wish to know without going there, and others wish to see, go, and travel, I have begun this little book.'
In 1589 Richard Hakluyt published Voyages, a text which became the template for the travel literature genre for many centuries.
In the 18th century, travel literature was commonly known as the Book of Travels, and most often these consisted of maritime diaries and the public couldn't get enough of them. Captain James Cook's diaries (1784) were the equivalent of today's best sellers. It was in the 18th century that travel writing matured as a genre. Every writer had a travel book or two and today nothing much has changed in this respect.
Other later examples of travel literature include accounts of the Grand Tour written by countless aristocrats, clergy, and others with money and leisure time, who traveled Europe to learn about the art and architecture of its past. The tradition of the Grand Tour lasted well into the 20th century and was still a feature of the Belle Epoque (the 1920's). Another travel literature pioneer was Robert Louis Stevenson in the late 19th century whose 'Travels with a donkey' introduced a light-hearted tone to the genre.

Planning A Quick Holiday For Three Days In Your Hometown
6:21 AMWinter is here and Christmas will soon be gone, soon the winter blahs will settle in. Some of you might want to get away from all this, but after paying your Christmas bills and spending a long holiday would it be possible to take quick holiday? The thought of spending lots of money on a holiday at such times can be daunting. In such a case what can be done?
But what about a getaway close by? There may be plenty of activities in your hometown, which you have not checked out. Since they are available; you mostly do not think much about them. In fact outsiders may be visiting the sites that you go by every day.
This way you can take three-day short vacations from your hectic life and enjoy a three-day stint right in your vicinity. Spend a little extra money on a hotel with an indoor pool, if you are experiencing snow and ice at this time. Usually most hotels offer Continental breakfasts to their guests and you could very well eat your other meals in the spots which you know as reasonable.
Those really short on money can stay at home. Use the answering machine for taking your messages, switch off the computer and use only your cell phone in case of emergencies. Try using your voice messaging from your cell. This way you can relax in your home, watch movies, eat popcorn and just enjoy do what you want to.
You might have a historical home in your locality which you see everyday? You might also have museums in your locality? Your town will surely have one you only need some asking around to discover them.
Most of us do not explore our city parks. Some of the parks could have exciting bike and walking trails. Utilize the free events. Use your local paper as a guide to finding out what is happening within your area itself.
Short holidays are an easy and exciting way of getting rid of the boredom of the day-to-day working while spending quality time with your near and dear ones. Spending a lot of money on such holidays is hardly necessary; you could just pack snacks and drinks and some night out stuff and zoom off! Selection of the place is important. Be sure that it is somewhere that you and your family will enjoy. Let everyone in the family voice their opinion about where they want to go or what they want to see.
Short trips can be a refreshing break for the family. Careful planning and a little imagination could help make it a great outing.

The Best All Inclusive Honeymoon Package In Belize Is Coco Plum Island
6:27 AMCoco Plum Island is a 16 acre cay, and is situated just 8 miles off the coast of Belize.
We were planning our honeymoon, and we both love 'bare feet and casual' and we found Coco Plum by accident when we were researching for a Caribbean Vacation, which then extended to Belize, and then the idea for a Belize Island Honeymoon came about.
We felt an all inclusive Belize honeymoon package would be our choice, a bit more research and the decision was made, and we have never regretted it.
We flew into Belize City from Newark, changed planes and flew to Dangriga, where we were met by one of the staff from Coco Plum, from their to the boat dock, and then 15 -20 minutes by small boat to the island. In fact from the moment we were picked up in the Coco Plum 'van' we realised this was going to be special. It's weird how sometimes you just get that great feeling really quickly.
When we reached the island it was straight to the bar, whilst our bags were sorted. Looking around we realised how beautiful it was, sitting in the thatch roofed bar looking out over a crystal clear turquoise/blue sea.
Our Cabana was very comfortable, and we really felt the staff had only one concern, and that was our well being. There is an impression that there is no electricity, and in fact the island generates all its own power, and produces its own water. This is not 24 hour service, shopping mall, duplex five star comfort, but we felt that everyone on the island were kind of 'no shoes' laid back like us.
Overall we had a great time, the food was absolutely delicious, something very important to me. The beach lovely, the water warm, and crystal clear. We don't scuba, but we do snorkel, and we were taken to some lovely places where the fish were just amazing.
We read a lot, and even went on an expedition into the interior of Belize, to the Mayan ruins tour, a must see. We couldn't go home and say we hadn't been and done anything!!
I will however especially remember the beauty of Coco Plum Island, the friendliness of the staff, and the effort they put in to make our stay memorable. The three great meals every day, and the people who we met who felt like we did.
This is just the best possible Belize honeymoon package we could have wished for.

Enjoy Waikiki Beach With A Waikiki Oceanfront Rental
6:28 AMEach year, an unlimited number of individuals make the decision to travel to Hawaii. Hawaii trips have rapidly increased in popularity over the past few years. There are a number of different reasons for that, such as the beautiful weather and breathtaking beaches. It fact, it has often been said that the beaches are what makes Hawaii so attractive and alluring to tourists. If the beaches are the main reason why you have decided to take a Hawaii trip, you may want to focus your vacation on those beaches. You can easily do this with an oceanfront vacation rental.
The first step in reserving an oceanfront vacation rental, for your next Hawaii trip, is to decide on an area of Hawaii that you would like to visit. While you may enjoy visiting Big Island, Kauai, Maui, Lanai, and Molokai, you may want to give Oahu some serious thought, particularly the Waikiki area. Waikiki is rapidly become a popular vacation destination for many tourists. One of the reasons for that is everything that Waikiki has to offer. While Waikiki is most well-known for its amazing nightlife, it is also home to the Waikiki Aquarium, as well as the Diamond Head Crater. Perhaps, what is best about Waikiki is that everything in the area is grouped together, within a reasonable amount of distance. This means that you should easily be able to walk from your oceanfront rental, hotel, or resort to wherever you want to go.
As mentioned above, if you are traveling to Hawaii just to see and enjoy the amazing Hawaiian beaches, you are advised to take advantages of those beaches. In addition to visiting an area like Waikiki, you may also want to make your overnight accommodations close to the beach or even directly on the beach. In Waikiki, you can easily do this by reserving a Waikiki oceanfront rental for your next Hawaii trip. Waikiki oceanfront rentals are the perfect way to spend your Waikiki vacation. In fact, some tourists say that you do not get the whole Waikiki experience unless you are staying along the beach.
Waikiki oceanfront rentals come in a number of different forms. Perhaps, the most popular type of Waikiki oceanfront rentals are oceanfront condos. Waikiki oceanfront condos are a number of living spaces that are all housed inside a large building. In Waikiki, these large buildings are often high-rises. In a way, Waikiki oceanfront condos resemble apartments. This is mostly because of everything that they include. Most Waikiki oceanfront condos come with multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, dinning rooms, living rooms, and kitchens. It is also common for Waikiki oceanfront condos to have laundry rooms or, at least, an onsite laundry facility.
In addition to oceanfront rentals, the Waikiki area also has a number of oceanfront hotels and vacation resorts. If you are looking for an affordable way to spend your vacation along Waikiki beach, you may want to look into Waikiki oceanfront hotels and resorts. As affordable as these overnight accommodations are, it is important to remember what you are getting. Unlike a Waikiki oceanfront condo, you will most likely not be given a full kitchen or a dinning room; however, it is possible to find luxury hotel or resort accommodations, but you will need to be prepared to pay for them.
If you are looking to enjoy everything that Waikiki has to offer, you are advised to book a stay at a Waikiki oceanfront rental. Whether you choose to rent a Waikiki oceanfront condo or book a stay at an oceanfront hotel or vacation resort, you will likely be pleased with your decision to not only visit Waikiki, but to stay on Waikiki Beach.
